Lesson for Sabbath 5/2/2026

From Routine to Relationship: Learning How to Study the Bible

Many of us own Bibles in multiple versions; however, our challenge does not lie in owning Bibles but in engaging with the Bibles we own. This week’s lesson, “How to Study the Bible,” moves us beyond the question of why Scripture matters and presses into something even more practical: How do we actually study the Bible to experience its power in our daily lives?

It’s possible to read the Bible quickly, check the box, move on, and walk away unchanged. This week challenges us to move beyond this kind of surface-level interaction into something deeper. Scripture isn’t meant to be rushed through; it’s meant to be lingered over, wrestled with, and internalized.

Think about the imagery presented this week: God’s Word as a lamp lighting a dark path. It doesn’t flood the entire area with light; it illuminates just enough for the next step. That means Bible study is not a sprint for information but a slow, intentional walk with God. That walk requires structure.

Time must be carved out intentionally. A place must be chosen deliberately. Distractions must be resisted consistently. Even Jesus modeled this: rising early, seeking solitude, prioritizing communion with the Father before anything else. If Jesus needed that rhythm and structure, how much more do we?

This lesson does not just provide logistics; it pushes us into method. Pray before you read. Write as you reflect. Revisit passages. Share what you learn. These are not just techniques; they are pathways to transformation. Because when the Word moves from page → to mind → to heart → to action, it begins to shape not just what we know, but who we become.

Perhaps one of the most powerful ideas this week is the concept of the “double blessing.” When we study, we are strengthened, but when we share, that growth multiplies. The Word was never meant to stay contained within us; it is meant to flow outward into the lives of others.

This week’s invitation:

Don’t just read the Bible—engage it deeply, consistently, and relationally.

Question of the Week

The lesson mentions that sharing what we learned through Bible study results in a 'double blessing.' What is the specific cognitive benefit for the person doing the sharing?

A. It provides public proof of one’s spiritual progress.
B. It eliminates the need for further personal study of that topic.
C. It fulfills the requirements of the Great Commission.
D. It triggers the summarizing and synthesizing process, which consolidates thoughts.
Correct Answer: D

Theme: Prove Me Now

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… Prove me now herewith,” says the Lord of Hosts, “and see if I will not open the windows of heaven…”

— Malachi 3:10

This week, we're reflecting on a powerful invitation from Malachi, one of the only places in Scripture where God invites us to prove Him. What does it mean to "prove God"? It's an invitation to trust Him enough to act on His Word, even when it feels uncomfortable or uncertain. Especially when funds feel tight, expenses are rising, and you're trying to make everything stretch — that's where faith meets action.

A Practical Way to Walk This Out:

  • Pray first — Ask God to align your heart and strengthen your faith to trust Him as your Source.
  • Decide intentionally — Return tithe and give offering as an act of worship, not pressure.
  • Step out in faith — Even when it feels like a stretch, choose obedience.
  • Watch what God does — Look for His provision, His peace, and the ways He makes room for you.

A Word for All Ages

To our youth: Trust God enough to obey His call. Your whole life will benefit from it.

To our young adults: Choosing to honor God first, even when things feel tight, strengthens your faith.

To our Young At Heart: Your continued faithfulness is a testimony and a covering for generations coming behind you.

A Matter of Worship

Across the United States, preparations are underway for the National Day of Prayer on May 7. This year's observance carries added significance as it aligns with the nation's 250th anniversary. In addition, a major national prayer gathering is scheduled for May 17 on the National Mall.

The Bible warns that in the last days, the issue will center not just on belief, but on worship. Revelation 14 calls all people to “worship Him that made heaven and earth,” drawing a clear distinction between true worship and systems that seek allegiance apart from God.

Who do we follow when there is a difference between God’s Word and human agreement? This week, ask God to root you deeply in truth so that your faith is not shaped by pressure, but by conviction.

What God’s People Should Remember

  • National and interfaith unity efforts are increasing
  • The final issue centers on worship and loyalty to God
  • Discernment is essential in times of growing unity
